Quickfix Grenade Launcher

This was a challenge I wanted to do, where I wanted to find a stylized asset of some sort, and try to recreate it, in as little time as possible, while maintaining quality. I came across this awesome concept from Garrett Post who was kind enough to give me the go ahead and recreate this (Thanks again Garrett!!) I highly recommend to go check out his page he has awesome stuff on there!

-----------------------------------------------

Main focus was nailing a clean low poly stylized look, while trying to remain as faithful to the source material as possible, but also something that I could hand paint. I utilized Plasticity for the majority of the high poly shapes, Zbrush for detailing and cleanup, and Blender was used for high poly modelling too, as well as for making the low poly meshes. Poly count comes in at just under 54k tris, (29k quads for the quad folk :) ) All on one 4k texture sheet.

-----------------------------------------------

When I saw the concept from Garrett, I pretty much had my mind made up which one I was gonna do, what I found initially more difficult than expected was making this from only one ortho view, ended up revealing discrepancies in certain sizing issues that didn't add up. You can see where I took some liberty where the grenade shells are sitting. They had to be re-positioned if I were to respect their original sizing, but it also had to pack in to the gun, and align with the barrel, while also not clipping in to anything. I took a little creative liberty to make it all come together but feel overall I think I stayed very true to the original concept.

-----------------------------------------------

This was also a test bed for some RnD for a future game project I am a part of, where I made my own custom stylized procedural generator that utilized voronoi cell shapes that were pushed into 'brush stroke' looking chunks scattered throughout the model in a smart way that helps give me my base layers to help envision how I was going to go about hand painting the rest of the gun after I did a complete paint over pass on top of it. I felt it really helped speed the process up, and treated it as an 'painterly' first pass- a sort of rough in essentially.

This was a blast to make and will be looking forward to making more stylized pieces as it's been super fun and a nice change of pace!
